Building Mado: How a Solo Founder Co-created an AI MVP with Component
Every startup begins with one person and one idea.
When Winnie started Mado, she was building it entirely on her own. Her vision was simple but ambitious: create an AI-powered travel wardrobe rental platform that helps travellers visiting Japan pack lighter and dress more confidently. Instead of buying clothes for a single trip, customers could receive a curated wardrobe based on their itinerary, travel dates and personal style—and simply return everything after their journey.
Like many early-stage founders, Winnie knew the problem she wanted to solve, but the product itself was still taking shape.
How should the AI understand a traveller's needs? How should recommendations work? What information should be collected? How should inventory, logistics and returns fit into the customer journey?
These weren't technical questions—they were product questions.

Why Winnie Chose Component
Winnie wasn't looking for a software vendor. She was looking for a product partner.
"What stood out was how quickly the team responded and how they approached discussions from a founder's perspective. They didn't just build what I asked for—they challenged ideas, offered suggestions, and helped me think through product decisions."
-- "Winnie, Founder of Mado"
Throughout the project, requirements continued to evolve. Pricing, rental policies, recommendation logic and operational workflows were refined multiple times as new scenarios emerged.
Rather than simply implementing changes, every discussion focused on finding the simplest solution for both customers and operations.
Building an AI Product Is More Than Building AI
The AI stylist is the most visible part of Mado, but it is only one piece of the overall experience.
Customers begin with a natural conversation about their trip, destinations, travel dates and style preferences. The AI recommends a personalised travel wardrobe, while the platform seamlessly handles checkout, payments, inventory, warehouse fulfilment, shipping, returns and deposit management behind the scenes.
One of the biggest lessons from this project was that not every problem should be solved with AI.
Our first implementation relied heavily on AI to make almost every decision. While it performed well in many scenarios, it struggled with edge cases, responses were sometimes inconsistent, and conversation speed became a concern.
Instead of continuing to fine-tune prompts, we redesigned the architecture.
Business rules such as pricing, inventory constraints and operational logic became deterministic and code-driven, while AI focused on areas that benefit from flexibility, natural conversation and personalised recommendations.
The result was a faster, more stable product with a much smoother user experience.
An MVP That Doesn't Feel Like an MVP
One of Winnie's most memorable moments came after the platform was completed.
During an investor presentation, investors were surprised to learn that what they were seeing was still only an MVP.
"They couldn't believe this was an MVP. The product felt much more complete than they expected at this stage."
-- "Winnie, Founder of Mado"
For us, that was exactly the goal.
An MVP shouldn't feel unfinished. It should feel polished enough for customers to trust it, while remaining flexible enough for founders to continue learning and evolving their business.
Building Products Together
Working with startups is different from delivering software for established businesses.
Ideas evolve. Assumptions change. The business grows while the product is being built.
Our partnership with Winnie wasn't about turning a specification into code. It was about co-creating a product, making decisions together, and helping transform an evolving idea into an AI-powered MVP ready for real users.
At Component, we believe the best startup products aren't built from perfect specifications. They're built through continuous collaboration, rapid iteration and shared product thinking.
That's how Mado came to life—and that's how we help founders turn ideas into products people are excited to use.
